OMD - OMG
Today, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark are mainly remembered for their cheesy 80’s synth tunes. Too bad. ’Dazzle Ships’ is a highly experimental album, a critically acclaimed triumph and a forgotten cult classic. Both title and cover art were inspired by an Edward Wadsworth painting, titled ‘Dazzle-ships in dry dock at Liverpool.’ Dazzle camouflage comes in disorienting patterns, supposed to distort a ship’s appearance when viewed through a periscope. Fans of ‘Joan of Arc’ were confused too. The album tanked. Last year, the razzle dazzle resurfaced for ‘English Electric.’
