HAPPY ANNIVERSARY DEAR WARMER

- Saleha Ambreen

I WAS going on with my life, and then on the 18th of April, 2017, you happened.

Through summers, and winters, in the dark and anxiety-killing-nights, through sickness and happiness I needed you and you were there for me. It’s not the warmth; it’s the level of comfort that only you have been able to make me feel.

You’ve tasted an ocean of my tears, and a bit of mucus too, haha..

If I felt too suffocated I would take you off, but still needed to hold you tight, at least by your sleeve; you know me so well, I like to take that for granted.

I’m talking about my favourite sweater that I took a chance on, while not even window shopping for one, and now this sweater is all I need.

The kind of sweater that I don’t even want to put to wash, I have BEEN THE MOST SELISH TOWARDS IT; NO matter how bad it may smell, it feels like the cleanest and the purest piece of clothing I have had.

When I newly buy clothes, I of course don’t want them to get worn off, so I ensure to dry clean them after every use. I perfume them even when I place it in the wardrobe; I take extra care of them.

They appreciate the amount of care and attention I’ve paid to them. In return, they make me look the prettiest. They appreciate how I’ve handled them with extra care, and they do their expected job in return of making me look my best.

But what if I treated them like my special sweater; wearing it off day and night, with all the salty tears and other residue. Would they continue to give me the same comfort that my favourite sweater does?

-I doubt! In fact, I am sure they can’t. The people you meet in life are just like those clothes. There will be a lot of men/women who may fall in love with the way you treat them, and yourself too. The way you laugh at their jokes, and smile for them. Fall in love with each of your colours (just not the dark ones); just like my lovely always dry cleaned, perfumed clothes like and appreciate the way I treat them. They feel inspired by you, they will appreciate how you care for them. Some may even feel like you are all they need, for a happy life. But how many of them have seen your ‘dark-side’?

How many would stand by your ‘dark-side’? How many of them would stand by you, even after you abandon them, like how I took off the sweater on the suffocating nights. How many of them would lend their shoulders to cry on, like the sweater lent its sleeve to me, even when I almost abandoned it. There will be a lot who may fall in love with the happy you, not with THE LAWED, REAL YOU.

There can be only one such sweater.
