Indian, Pakistani troops trade heavy fire on LOC

JAMMU: Indian and Pakistani troops traded heavy fire on the Line of Control (LOC) on Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

Police sources said the Pakistan Army started indiscrimi­nate shelling and firing on Indian positions in Digwar area.

“The Pakistanis used mortars, small arms and automatics to target Indian positions. The ceasefire violation started at 7:30am,” a police officer said. “Indian positions retaliated effectivel­y and strongly.”

No casualty or damage has been reported from the Indian side.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Syed Altaf Bukhari on Sunday ordered the closure of all private coaching centres in the Kashmir Valley for 90 days, officials said.

The decision follows the Minister’s warning to students to join classes or face the consequenc­e of educationa­l institutio­ns being closed down.

Chairing a meeting of officers of his department here on Sunday, Bukhari said the order should be immediatel­y communicat­ed to the district authoritie­s for strict compliance.

The move follows spiralling student protests in the Kashmir Valley seeking justice to the Kathua rape and murder victim.

Bukh ari on saturday advised students protesting over the Kathua rape-murder case to control their emotions and resume their classes.

“After the ka thu a incident, we gave the students a chance to vent their emotions. Students should control their emotions and now go back to their classes,” the Minister told the media here.
