Rock-solid Verma wins IGS ‘Race to Scotland’

Dubai: ga ur avv er ma held his nerve when it mattered most to win the indian Golfers Society’s (IGS) season-long ‘Race to Scotland’ in a dramatic finish to the grand finale at Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course at the weekend.

His irons and short game dialled in, Verma tallied 39 points, beating his nearest challenger and the everpopula­r Ashok Kumar on a countback as the Race to Scotland, formerly known as the Order of Merit, went down to the wire.

Verma and Kumar both won all expenses paid trip to Scotland where they will have the opportunit­y to play on difference courses overflowin­g with a wealth of history and tradition, thanks to the support of Chivas.

Elsewhere, Chandru Manghnani produced the shot of the season when he aced the par-3, 11th with a six-iron for a second hole in one of his career, but Suresh Shewakrama­ni agonizingl­y missed out on a similar feat by six inches on the seventh, which had a gleaming Bentley at stake.

The coveted Bentley prize may have gone abegging, but it certainly added to the excitement of the day which also saw golfers, who fell short of making the cut for the Race to Scotland finale, compete for the Chivas Cup along with invited guests.

Bipin Bhatia with 36 points and Swati Singh (33) took the honours in their respective divisions as or ga ni se rs of the Indian Golfers Society thanked the sponsors, including Chivas, Bentley, Midcom, Turkish Airlines, Drissaur and Heilbronn, for making the season a great success.
