Fog causes 21 vehicles’ pile-up on Sharjah road, two injured

SHARJAH: A massive pile-up accident has taken place on Emirates Road due to heavy fog on Monday morning, involving 21 vehicles.

The cars were travelling towards Umm Al Quwain. Sharjah Police patrols and ambulances rushed to the scene to handle the situation.

Thankfully, the wide-scale accident resulted in the minor injury of two individual­s only.

While all other passengers and drivers remained safe from the crash.

According to the police, the accident took place at around 7:50am.

Sharjah Police warned motorists to stay alert and drive with extreme caution to prevent accidents that might take place due to low visibility and fog formation during the coming winter season.

The police have urged motorists to leave safe distance between vehicles to avoid such a tragic incident.

The National Centre of Meteorolog­y ( NCM) has called on motorists to take all necessary precaution­s when on roads due to poor horizontal visibility owing to fog formation In a statement, the Centre said that poor visibility is expected over some coastal and internal areas, during the period from 2am until 9am.

The NCM said, Fog over Al Tawi, Hamim, Muzaira, Mukhariz in the Al Dhafra area. There were fog in Sharjah’s inland areas affecting the morning traffic.

The NCM said chance of fog formation and deteriorat­ing horizontal visibility to lower levels and lacking at times over some internal and coastal areas.

However, the lowest temperatur­e recorded over the country was 17.5°C in Damtha, near Al Ain, at 5:45am.

While the highest temperatur­e recorded over the country was 45.5°C in Sweihan at 2pm.

On Sunday, the Eastern Region Police Department of Sharjah Police arrested a driver on charges of reckless driving, hours ater a video clip had been posted on social media in which he was seen driving his car at an excessive speed of up to 200 km/hour on a highway in Khor Fakkan, puting his life and the lives of others at risk.

Following intensive investigat­ions ater verifying the video clip, the police were able to identify the vehicle, arrest the driver and take all legal measures against him.

Warning them against reckless driving, the police called on drivers to abide by traffic laws and adhere to the specified speed limits.

On the other hand, Dubai Police have suspended its traffic fine discount initiative. The initiative allowed a motorist to get up to 100 per cent off on penalties.

The initiative began in February 2020 ater the first initiative ended.
