The Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club kicked off their 49th UAE National Day celebrations early on Wednesday with an exhibition match featuring some of the cream of UAE and overseas polo playing talent.

The nail-biting encounter between Ghantoot A and Ghantoot B teams was the highlight of Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club’s UAE National Day Polo event organised in co-operation with Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

Ali Al Bawardy, Chairman of Emirates Polo Association, was the guest of honour at the event. Zayed Khalifa Zayed Al Aboudi Al Zaabi, Executive Director of the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club, honoured Bawardy with a memento inscribed with the picture of Sheikh Falah playing the ‘sport of kings’.

The match had all the elements to keep the sport’s enthusiasts watching the action broadcast live on Youtube, entertained throughout the four chukkas of play. Ghantoot B team had a perfect start as Abdullah Bin Desmal put them ahead with two goals by the end of the first chukka.

Players of both teams failed to get their names on the score-sheet during the second chukka, enabling Ghantoot B to hold on to their lead. Nasser Al Shamsi added one goal in the third chukka to stretch their advantage. However, their joy was shortlived as Ghantoot A rallied to effect a comeback with two goals coming from Ali Al Marri. The final chukka witnessed a tense batle with Ghantoot A’s Ramiro Cordero making all the difference through a standout performance.

Cordero’s dominant display turned the tide his team’s favour and it was entirely because of his three goals that Ghantoot A were able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as they wrapped the game 5-4.

The event took place behind closed doors in line with the UAE’S Covid-19 precautionary and preventive measures, and the club management followed the highest standards of health and safety norms to ensure everyone taking part is safe. Taking no risk, the management also ensured the players and staff present on the occasion were tested to rule out any risk factor.

Zaabi said: “Through our UAE National Day Polo event, the club was delighted to join the country in celebrating the spirit of solidarity and unity.

“As the UAE’S official annual event, National Day brings together its multitude of nationalities in a united celebration of inclusivity and tolerance.

“On the 2nd of December each year, the leadership and the people of the UAE celebrate the UAE National Day, which manifests the national will of the founding leaders, and the determination of the loyal sons of the homeland, to promote the concept of the union.”

DUBAI: The Dubai Sports Council on Tuesday welcomed former France and Manchester United star Mikael Silvestre and ex-arsenal and England midfield ace Jack Wilshere at their headquarters and presented them with a copy of “My Story”, the anecdotal reminiscence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The duo were also feted with the ‘Medal of First Line of Defence’ as well. Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, presented ‘My Story’ and the commemorative medals to Silvestre and Wilshere at the DSC office, in the presence of Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Assistant Secretary General of the council.

The ‘Medal of First Line of Defence’ pays homage to the selfless service of Dubai Police, Dubai Civil Defence, Dubai Health Authority, and Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services in the fight to contain the COVID-19 pandemic in Dubai. Together, they were at the forefront of the Emirate’s fight to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Welcoming the two stars, Hareb gave the stars a tour of the council’s headquarters and gave them an explanation of the role Dubai Sports Council plays in spreading the practise of sports and in developing Dubai’s sports sector, as well as organising and supporting local and international sports events.

Silvestre, who spent a decade at Manchester United and won five English Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League with the Red Devils, was delighted to receive the honour and said: “I love Dubai and I am living here with my family now. The people are really nice here and the city is amazing, the lifestyle is amazing and it is very safe – the perfect place to live with your family.”

Thanking Dubai Sports Council for the Medal, Wilshere, who is currently training in Dubai, said: “I am here in Dubai, using the Nad Al Sheba Sports Club facilities — fantastic facilities. I have been training there for a few days now. I wanted to come over here and really step up my training and get to a good level of fitness.

“I have been coming to Dubai for 10 years. My family, they love it. My kids, they love it. The people here are kind. They look ater us and yeah, I will be coming here a lot more in the future.”

The 28-year-old Wilshere, who came up through Arsenal’s youth academy and impressed from an early age, made his first-team debut in 2008 to become Arsenal’s youngest ever league debutant at the age of 16 years, 256 days. Over the following decade, he earned a number of accolades including the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2010-11, as well as Arsenal’s Player of the Season award that same year.

Injuries, however, hampered his career at the Gunners and he eventually let the Emirates Stadium in 2018 to join West Ham United on a three-year contract. The contract, however, was mutually terminated in October, 2020, as Wilshere could only manage 19 appearances in two years.
