Toronto hold off New England to snap 6-game losing streak

FOXBOROUGH: Yeferson Soteldo, Kemar Lawrence and Tsubasa Endoh scored in the first half and Toronto FC snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the New England Revolution on Wednesday night.

Assistant coach Javier Perez directed Toronto ater first-year coach Chris Armas was fired following a 7-1 loss to DC United on Saturday.

Toronto (2-8-2) entered 19 points behind Eastern Conference leader New England (7-3-3) in the standings.

Soteldo opened the scoring in the ninth minute by capitalizi­ng on a mistake by goalkeeper Brad Knighton, who came out of his area but couldn’t clear it. Knighton was playing in his first game since March 7, 2020.

Lawrence scored on a breakaway in the 15th, and Endoh curled in a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box in the 24th for a 3-0 lead.

New England, which entered 5-0-0 at home, had two good scoring chances in the first half but Adam Buksa had a header go off the crossbar in the 34th and Gustavo Bou sent a shot off the post in the 37th. Carles Gil scored for New England in the 56th by bending a shot over the wall on a free kick, and Buksa headed in a cross from second-half substitute Emmanuel Boateng in the 78th.

The start was delayed nearly 90 minutes because of lightning.

Meanwhile, Kelyn Rowe and Raúl Ruidíaz scored and the Seatle Sounders ran their season-opening undefeated streak to an Mls-record 13 games, beating the Houston Dynamo 2-0 on Wednesday night.

Seatle (8-0-5) broke a tie with the LA Galaxy (1996, 2010), Kansas City (2000) and Real Salt Lake (2014) for the streak mark.

Rowe opened the scoring in the 62nd minute with his first MLS goal since 2018. Alex Rodan setled a deflected ball and sent it across goal for a redirectio­n by Rowe.

Ruidíaz scored his 10th goal of the season, tied for the MLS lead, in second-half stoppage time by finishing Brad Smith’s cross.

Seatle has won its last eight matches with Houston (3-4-6) to match its longest winning streak over an opponent. The Sounders won eight straight against Chivas USA from 2012-14.

Elsewhere, José Cifuentes and Diego Rossi scored and Los Angeles FC beat Austin FC 2-0 on Wednesday night for the expansion club’s first loss at Q2 Stadium.

LAFC (5-4-3) won its second straight game on the road ater not winning away from home in its previous eight tries. Austin (3-6-4) has scored just six goals in its last nine matches - with four coming against Portland on Thursday night to snap an eight-match winless run.

LAFC capitalize­d on a failed clearance by goalkeeper Brad Stuver in the 39th minute. Kim Moon-hwan intercepte­d the bad pass and his shot was denied by Stuver, but Cifuentes was there for the rebound.
