Ex-chief whip faces flak over remarks

- AM Abdussalam

KOCHI: Ruling Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M), opposition Congress, Muslim Youth League, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and a host of Muslim oufits demanded stern action against former chief whip and Kerala Janapaksham leader PC George for making controversial remarks in a highly inflammatory speech delivered at the Hindu Mahasammelanam in Trivandrum on Friday.

In the complaint submitted to the chief minister’s office and DGP, Youth League noted that the hate speech of George was aimed to raise suspicions against the minorites and to cause rift between the communities in the state.

The controversial speech was delivered by George at the inaugural ceremony of Ananthapuri Hindu Mahasammelanam of Hindu Mahaparishad in Trivandrum.

The CPI-M on Saturday protested against the hate speech and sought apology from George.

“All communal forces are making conscious efforts to establish communal divide in Kerala. George’s speech cannot be dismissed as his usual loose talk. He should withdraw his comments and apologise to Kerala people,” CPI-M said in a statement on Saturday.

DYFI Poonjar block commitee lodged the complaint against George at the Eratupeta police station on Saturday.

“George has been engaging in dividing our land on communal and caste lines. His comments are threatening the peaceful existence of minorities and are aimed at encouraging forces to atack them,” DYFI said in the complaint.

Kerala Muslim Jamaat Youth Council also demanded action against George.

On Saturday, the Youth League lodged a complaint with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the state police chief Anil Kant.

“George has made critical and false allegations in his speech.

They may put the neighbourhood beneath a cloud of suspicion and trigger a communal rit between the neighbourhood and folks of different faiths,” Youth League state secretary PK Firoz said on Saturday.

Congress leaders Shafi Parambil and VT Balram requested the police to book George and put him behind bars.

“What prevents Kerala police from registering a case in opposition to George? He’s repeatedly spreading venom at public locations,” Balram said.
