Man imprisoned for harassing ex-girlfriend

DUBAI: The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced an Asian to two years in jail, to be followed by deportatio­n ater serving his sentence for posting pictures with his ex-girlfriend on Facebook and sending indecent pictures to her husband and brother via Whatsapp ater stealing her phone while she was returning from a mall in Mirdif.

The Appellate Court commuted the jail term to 6 months and upheld the deportatio­n.

According to the case file, which took place in July 2021, a woman reported to the police that her phone was stolen and that she had been blackmaile­d by someone she previously had a love affair with.

According to her testimony in the interrogat­ions, a person atacked her while she was in the Mirdif area and he stole her phone and threatened her to divulge dishonoura­ble mater if she did not respond to continue their relationsh­ip. The woman added that she had a love affair with the suspect but she was now married and had a child.

She added she asked her boyfriend not to contact her again, but he threatened to publish her pictures and send them to her family and her husband if she did not continue in the relationsh­ip. The woman’s husband stated that he received messages from his wife’s phone while she was with him, so he asked her about it, and she told him that her phone was stolen and that someone threatened her, so he informed the police. The suspect was arrested and confessed to sending pictures and messages to the woman through Facebook and to a number of her family members via Whatsapp so the court sent him to jail.
