Death toll rises to 10 from super typhoon Nura

- Ma .

MANILA: The death toll from the onslaught of super typhoon Karding (international name: Nura) has hit 10 according to the latest report on Wednesday by the National Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

In its latest report, the NDRRMC said the fatalities were led by six people dead in Bulacan, Central Luzon, one each in Zambales, one in Quezon, in Southern Luzon, and one in Rizal province, also in Southern Luzon.

The cause of death included drowning, motorcycle accident, and landslides, the NDRRMC said.

Authorities noted the low number on fatalities considering that Karding was carrying intense winds of 194 kilometers near the centre and gustiness of 294 kph.

Authorities atributed this to the preemptive evacuation of residents in the “peril” areas prone to landslides, flooding, and storm surges from the coastal areas.

18 persons were believed still missing in Quezon, Rizal, and Camarines Norte in the Bicol region.

In its latest report, NDRRMC said some 29,893 or 157,053 have been affected by the super typhoon in wide areas of the main island of Luzon like the Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera administrative region in the Northern Luzon Highlands, as well as Mimaropa region, and Calabarzon in Southern Luzon.

A total of 8,828 families remained inside the evacuation centers while 3,778 families continued to stay in the houses of their friends and relatives.

Karding, thestrongeststormtohitthephilippines this year brought heavy rain and strong winds that triggered floodings and damaged crops.

At least three towns in Quezon province and four in Nueva Ecija have passed a resolution declaring a state of calamity due to the super typhoon.

This will enable the towns to make use of their emergency funds to help farmers, people, and other residents to take care of the heavy damage done to them by super typhoon Karding.

The Department of Agriculture (DA), meanwhile said the initial farm losses amounted to $2.3 million representing 5,886 metric tonnes of crops planted by 741 farmers on 16,229 hectares of land.
