2 jailed for running over a girl, robbing her friend

DUBAI: The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced an Asian in presence and another in absentia to three years in jail to be followed by deportatio­n and fined them Dhs11,000 on charges of running over a girl and robbing her boyfriend under duress ater assaulting them and threatenin­g to kill them in collaborat­ion with others.

The case dated back to last January when an Asian filed a complaint in which he stated that he had been assaulted and robbed and his girlfriend was run over in a parking lot of a building in which he lived in Dubai Investment­s Park.

The complainan­t stated that ater he let his house and went to the car-park to use his girlfriend’s car, he was surprised by five people wearing hats and facemasks assaulting him and his girlfriend.

The complainan­t added that he tried to resist the gang members who threatened to kill him with a pistol before continuing to assault him and beat his girlfriend, who was trying to resist them until a gang member stole his handbag containing Dhs8,000 and personal documents.

The girlfriend stated that she was assaulted and threatened to be killed by the gang members who kept beating her and stopped only ater she alleged that she was suffering from a heart disease and was likely to die any minute.

The girlfriend added that the gang members then robbed her boyfriend and while fleeing away in their car, they ran over her and consequent­ly she sustained a broken pelvis, bleeding in the liver and scratches on her body.

According to the official documents, a team of detectives managed to identify two of the suspects and to arrest one of them. On interrogat­ion, he confessed that he collaborat­ed with the other suspect, who is still at large, and others in robbing and assaulting the girl and her boyfriend ater fiting a GPS tracker on the girl’s car.

He added that he believed that the girl had large amounts of money and consequent­ly he planned to rob her in collaborat­ion with others.

He installing the tracking device on the girl’s car and on the day of the incident he saw her moving from her girlfriend’s house, he said, adding that they assaulted them and tried to kidnap them to force them to give their money.
