Drinking ample water good for skin

DUBAI: While seasons impact the largest organ of the human body, skincare is more than the creams and moisturisers. Even a dermatologist has reiterated the power of hydration which means drinking sufficient amounts of water, as well as the great influence of the balanced diet.

“Drink a good amount of water daily to keep yourself and your skin well-hydrated. Have a healthy, well-balanced diet. Sleep at least seven to eight hours per day. Exercising has a positive effect on your skin as it improves blood flow to nourish cells and removes toxins from your body and skin,” said Emirates Hospital Jumeirah specialist dermatologist Dr. Maya El Khoury.

Clinical dietitians Juhi Bhambhaney, Rana Ghazal, and Saba Mohammad Sabir of the Medcare Hospitals & Medical Centres, Wellth (Aster DM Healthcare Integrative Medicine Hub), and Prime Medical Centre-king Faisal, Sharjah respectively, and Al Zahra Hospital-dubai dietitian Dana Al Shakaa, were also interviewed regarding effective skin care relative to the transitory Winter-spring phase.

Al Shakaa said winter makes the skin dry “due to the cold air and sometimes feels itchy, rough and moisture vanishes.” Strawberries, cucumbers, lettuce, celery, healthy soups, milk and its alternatives as well as fruit smoothies “are other sources of water that could count to your total daily intake.”

Bhambhaney’s advice is to indulge in oily fish, egg yolks and fortified food since the free and best source of Vitamin D-the sun-is most of the time hiding in the cold months: “Healthy Vitamin D levels is crucial for skin protection, especially the active form which is Vitamin D3 (that) has shown to help in skin growth and repair as well as in preventing premature aging of the skin. Vitamin D has a role to play when it comes to acne and dry skin.”
