Three sent to jail for robbing investor

DUBAI: The Dubai Criminal Court imprisoned three GCC citizens and an African for six months and fined them jointly the equivalent of 268,000 Euros in Emirati dirhams, which they stole from an Arab investor and his assistant on a public road while they were walking in the Naif area, ater they impersonat­ed policemen.

The court also ordered the deportatio­n of the African suspect from the country ater serving his sentence, and that the suspects jointly pay Dhs51,000 to the victim as temporary civil compensati­on, in addition to Dhs530,000 and 9,700 Euros, part of the amount they stole from him.

The events of the case took place in December 2022, when an Arab investor submited a report stating that he had been robbed, when he was walking in Naif area with his assistant, adding that he saw some people watching him when he was heading to an exchange office to exchange 268,000 Euros in Emirati dirhams.

The victim added in the interrogat­ions that he changed his course and entered one of the side streets, but two people followed him and asked him about what was in the bag, so he told them that it was his money.

Then, he added, two other people arrived at the place, one of whom claimed to be from the anti-money laundering teams in the police and asked him for receipts proving that he had the money in a legal way. The other two allegedly tried to pull the bag, where his assistant tried to prevent them, but they stole the money and fled from the place, so he reported the incident to the police.

According to the case file, an investigat­ion team collected inferences from the crime scene and identified the suspects who were arrested in possession of part of the money and items which they bought with the remaining amount.

Upon interrogat­ions, they admited that they had planned to rob the investor and that they had divided the money among themselves.

They added that the amounts seized in their possession were part of the stolen money, ater exchanging it for the local currency.
