DR. MARY’S STORY OF RESILIENCE
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES AND EMBRACING OPPORTUNITIES
I am honored and grateful for the invaluable lessons in resilience that my mother and grandmother imparted to me during my formative years. They consistently emphasized the importance of perseverance, reminding me that life's obstacles could be transformed into stepping stones towards achieving my goals.
Growing up amidst the Civil Rights Movement, I witnessed and experienced profound challenges stemming from pervasive discrimination against Blacks. The prevalent racism and bias based on skin color often left me disheartened. I questioned whether I could effect change. Eventually, I embraced education as my pathway to a brighter future.
Securing a full-time job that covered my college tuition, I embarked on the demanding journey of working and attending college simultaneously. Despite the immense challenges, I persevered. Over time, I began to see progress and opportunities emerging.
Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the blessings that enabled me to reach my educational goals. The pinnacle of my academic journey was achieving my Doctorate of Philosophy Degree and Doctorate of Ministry Degree. Today, I hold licenses as a Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor with 10 Advanced certifications. Additionally, I am a Board-Certified Master Mental Health Professional and Life Coach, Clinical Supervisor, and an International Representative for a Christian Counseling Organization.
As I look back, I find solace in knowing that I am better equipped today, and our nation has taken significant strides towards addressing injustices. I remain cognizant of the coexistence of opportunity and opposition. When confronted with challenges, I swiftly embrace them as opportunities for growth and learning. By shifting my focus towards the potential within every challenge, I diminish the power of opposition. Every setback becomes an opportunity for resilience and a greater comeback.
