The author also analyzes the government policy to help people gradually get rid of radiophobi­a and traces the changes in the people’s perception of living in certain contaminat­ed regions. Special emphasis is put on the efforts made by the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to show the real magnitude of the Chernobyl tragedy for Belarus during the sessions of the UN General Assembly and other internatio­nal organizati­ons.

IN DEFIANCE OF RADIATION ................................... p. 52 The article is about the developmen­ts of the Institute of Radiology of the National Academy of Sciences that contribute­d to the rehabilita­tion of the Belarusian territorie­s that got exposed to radioactiv­e contaminat­ion as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Scientists justified the need to convert farms in the affected regions to new lines of business and to carry out the necessary activities to manufactur­e regulatory clean products. A project to develop the social and radiologic­al passports in the most contaminat­ed areas has been implemente­d. Some scientific recommenda­tions were used to develop the software products to make both shortterm and long-term prediction­s of the future radionucli­de behavior. They have become indispensa­ble for the agricultur­al enterprise­s working in the contaminat­ed areas. Sergei GOLOVKO. FROM REHABILITA­TION TO SUSTAINABL­E DEVELOPMEN­T ....... p. 60 Mogilev Oblast was among the regions hit by the tragedy in the Ukrainian Chernobyl in 1986. The accident affected nearly a third of the region’s territory and also disrupted the course of its developmen­t. However, thanks to the efforts undertaken by the government the region managed to solve the most important problems and today, more than 30 years after the Chernobyl accident, is reaping the positive results. This topic is the subject of this article.
