Make- up industry needs upskilling workshops

- IRENE SHONE BG CORRESPONDENT

Local makeup artiste, Pono Mapena of Feks Make up, suggests that there should be free makeup workshops, to elevate the art of makeup in the country. She is of the view that with a rising number of makeup artistes locally, there should be exceptional classes to heighten the industry. Her observation is that many of the makeup artistes learn this art through You Tube channels, herself included. However, she notes that sometimes, it needs time to reach that perfection stage which is what the industry needs to also be able to compete at an international level. She started doing makeup in 2018, and she tells BG Style that while at it, it’s a learning process all the time. “Makeup is a beauty enhancer and not meant to literally change someone’s natural look. I have come to admit that some of the fellow makeup artistes overdo it, to a point that sometimes a client ends up hating makeup because of their first experience with the art that did not come out so well,” she said.

Mapena however acknowledges those who are doing so well within this industry, and challenges them to come together for a once in a while workshop to groom others. She tells BG Style that sometimes it takes coming together, to achieve something good. She is therefore content that if makeup artists come together, they will learn so much from each other. She is a lover of perfection and notes that she likes learning from those who do something better than her.

“I strive to build a good profile in any business opportunity, and I go along with the happy client tag line because it always empowers me when my clients leave my studio impressed,” she said. She shares that different skin types such as oily skin, dry skin and normal skin absorb makeup differently. It is very important for the makeup artistes to observe this while doing their work.

She adds that choosing a foundation is determined by one’s complexion, to avoid whitish look- like makeup results.

“Most makeup artistes have less skills because they are self- taught, and I suggest that maybe we should host makeup workshops for free,” she said.
