Zebras still need Juluka

- Kabelo Gadise BG Correspondent

Former national team captain, Joel Mogorosi could be getting on with age but he may be arguably the missing link in Adel Amrouche’s rejuvenated Zebras squad. Mogorosi’s experience, influence and leadership qualities may be just what Amrouche needs to rack up even more victories against worthy African rivals.

The Zebras recently displayed a deluxe performance against neighbors Zambia in a 2021 Afcon Qualifiers that saw the local lads cause an upset against a stronger Chipolopolo side, claiming a 1- 0 victory at the Obed Itai Chilume Stadium in Francistown. Although the team did exceptionally well, against a physically stronger and strapping Chipolopolo side, there was a bit of lack here and there; the leadership, inspiration and guidance on the field of play is not what you would expect.

Mogorosi is a fearless and prolific motivator, the kind of leader that pushes his teammates hard; he knows who can do better so he pushes and rebukes them when they have done wrong thus helping them maintain the ambitions.

His leadership goes well for a team that has many youngsters brimming with talent but still wet behind ears and unable to make quality decisions on the field of play. With the Zebras playing a counter attacking football they need speedy wingers out wide and a strong striker to hold the balls for the incoming wingers. Mogorosi is suitable for that role as he is still fast , physically strong and can arrive late in the box to pounce on the rebounds. In the past Mogorosi rose to consistent levels of high performances. He is one of the most capped national team players and amongst the all time national team top scorers. The 36- year old is a hardworker and has belief and confidence in his ability and those of his teammates. In an interview this week, Mogorosi said he was impressed with how the Zebras played, “I am impressed with how they played looking at the fact that it was their second game after a lengthy break and against a very strong opponent.” Quizzed if he believes he still has something to offer the team he said he cannot be the judge of that. “I cannot say that, only the coach can decide on that but even if I am to be available for the team, I will retire one day so they need to replace me one day.” Mogorosi further, said his relationship with the coach is not sour as people might think. “In my entire career I never had any issues with coaches, so I don’t have problems with coach Amrouche, we talk every time we meet,” the 36 year- old said.

On the other hand, Football pundit City Keagakwa said he was impressed by the team’s ability to defend and absorb pressure,“lately the team has considered less goals and this proves that the coach has been working on the defensive aspect of the game.”

He added that Joel Mogorosi is a born winner, with positive energy he transfers to youngsters. “He is very much needed but it goes back to the coach if he needs him or not.”
