Masisi lures mining companies
President Mokgweetsi Masisi is due to take part in one of the biggest mining jamboree on the continent – Mining Indaba Virtual, next month.
Organisers of the event, Investing in African Mining Indaba, said Masisi will be joining President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo ( DRC) and President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, at the virtual event slated for the 2nd to 3rd February. The virtual mining event substitutes the traditional physical event now billed for 7- 10 February 2022.
Last year, Portfolio Director at Investing in African Mining Indaba, Simon Ford announced postponement of the physical event due to the on- going COVID- 19 pandemic. Ford said the 2021 edition of Investing in African Mining Indaba has been cancelled due to the ongoing uncertainty caused by COVID- 19. “We recognise the role that Mining Indaba plays in connecting the global mining community and its significance in shaping the industry.“This strategic event ( Mining Indaba Virtual) will feature free high- level content streamed online, including pioneering insights from the industry’s heavyweights, multi- stakeholder strategic conversations, keynote addresses and more,” said Ford.
For the last 27 years, Investing in African Mining Indaba has been about bringing the global mining community together and delivering world- class, face- to- face events. The mining sector continues to be the backbone of Botswana’s economy, and one of the largest contributors to gross domestic product. With accolades showered on Botswana for the way mineral proceeds were converted to fiscal revenues, combined with sound economic policies, President Masisi’s participation at the Mining Indaba Virtual is expected to be a major highlight.
Organisers of Mining Indaba Virtual believes there are significant investment opportunities in expansion and development of the country’s coal, coal bed methane, uranium, gold and silver. Meanwhile, President Ramaphosa will take to the online stage to discuss South Africa, the mining economy and the way forward for the country, including opportunities for international investment in gold and PGMS, progress on the country’s response to the global pandemic and ultimately provide an update on South Africa’s power generation and supporting independent generation for mining operators.
