Uncertainty over Football resumption

-

The disappointments, failures and the joys that form part of the beautiful game were ruined as the terrible state of affairs caused by the Covid- 19 pandemic continue.

A prediction of what the year 2021 might bring to football can never be primed in our mental; it will be just another moment of taking a shot in the dark.

When quizzed about the resurrection of football, member of the committee that oversees the transformation of the Botswana Football League ( BFL), Nicholas Zackhem stressed that the question was hard to answer. “We are yet to know the fate of our season, and we don’t know when we are going to start. The recent figures of Covid- 19 as well as the new variant of the virus has derailed our program,” he stressed.

Zackhem further added that they are waiting for health authorities to give them the go ahead to start. “All was looking good before the end of the year but now with the closure of the borders and curfew on our side we are not sure what the Covid task force team will do next,” the business mogul shared with BG Sport.

The Botswana Football Association ( BFA) has been pushing for the league to start in February immediately after the conclusion of the 2019/ 2020 Orange FA Cup, which is set to be played this month. “BFA wants us to start before end of February but we are yet to get the go ahead from health authorities.”

Quizzed about the budget for testing the Gaborone United, Zackhem couldn’t reveal the details but he said they were hoping to test players before and after matches. “We need government’s assistance in this department, the picture isn’t yet clear if government will help,” he said.

However, he said the negotiations with the league sponsors are ongoing and the deal will be finalized before the resumption of the football league, “the sponsorship isn’t yet finalized but most definitely there will be a sponsor or more on board.”
