club Chairman, Boniface Mabeo said the club was training ahead of the BAA sanctioned event but they have since stopped training to go into quarantine. “This is because one of our athletes has tested positive for Covid - 19. As a result, 10 members of the club that were in close contact with the athlete will be going on a 14days mandatory quarantine from today ( 20th January). The ten were tested today and will receive their results while away on quarantine,” a statement from the club reads.

Furthermor­e, the club statement reads: “This developmen­t has also forced the club management to suspend training for this week. This is a precaution intended to avoid any further transmissi­on and to protect our athletes. Nonetheles­s, the rest of the team which will not be in quarantine will commence training on Monday, 25th January 2021 from 1600hrs to 1730hrs at Ramotswa Showground­s.” In addition, Mabeo said the COVID- 19 case has further disrupted their plans as local 800m sensation, Nijel Amos was expected to visit the club and give a word of encouragem­ent to the young athletes. “We were supposed to meet with Amos today in an effort to inspire our athletes.” According to Mabeo, theRamotsw­a club was founded in 2019 and registered last year.

“We have already competed in two BAA events and most of our athletes managed to finish in podium places even though none of them has qualified for the Olympic games yet.” Mabeo said his club now consists of an impressive 45 athletes. The club chairman said they have already communicat­ed the new developmen­ts to the BAA, who are expected to host their first event of the year this week amid rising COVID - 19 cases.
