COVID 19 strikes national team

- Baitshepi Sekgweng

The Covid 19 virus recently reared its ugly head at athletics national team camp after a top track and field star reportedly tested positive. The athlete who frequently competes at international stages including Olympics games is reported to have tested positive for Covid- 19. BG Sports is reliably informed that the sensational track star has been kept in isolation at a special place as he avoided the Sir Ketumile hospital, in a bid to avoid prying eyes of the public. The athlete ( name withheld) is reported to be in his second week of isolation.

In a recent interview with BG sport, BAA spokesperson Oabona Theetso confirmed that indeed there was an athlete who tested positive but couldn’t reveal the runner’s identity. “It is not procedural to mention people’s names on issues when it comes to health because that is confidential information between a patient and their doctor. Nevertheless can confirm that indeed there was a case of covid- 19, unfortunately I can’t state the names.

I don’t think having the case has affected our plans, “he said. While the Olympics are slowly drawing near there has been some calls for Tokyo bound athletes to get vaccinated before they jet out of the country. When quizzed about getting the athletes vaccinated, Theetso said the matter falls out of their jurisdiction. “We haven’t been briefed yet but I think Botswana National Olympic Committee ( BNOC) will enquire on our behalf because they are the custodians of Olympic Games,” said Theetso.

In the meantime, the national team has been trimmed from 18 athletes to 15 with Zibani Ngozi, Tsaone Sebele and Laone Maotoanong being the latest casualties.
