Inclusive virtual race marks Olympics celebrations
The Botswana Olympic Committee is marking this year’s Olympic Day Celebrations with 100- 400 km challenge. This calls for all Batswana to participate in the virtual race through the Strava running app that records the distance covered by each runner. The race started from Monday this week and it will be concluded during the Olympic day celebrations on June 23th. The Strava running app is expected to record the leader boards that will see those covering the most distance winning numerous prizes. Addressing audience members during the launch of the 100- 400km challenge this week in Gaborone, The Minister of Sport Tumiso Rakgare applauded the BNOC for making the Olympic celebrations virtual and highly interactive at the same time. “It is critical during these times to think of ways in which to engage the public while adhering to protocols in place, and for that we thank you. I therefore urge the sporting fraternity to explore alternative ways of returning to sports as we are battling to contain the spread of Covid- 19,” Rakgare said.
Rakgare further explained that the Olympic celebrations are held across the world without fail and the movement is not only about athletes and the quadrennial event pitting countries against one another for the chance of glory. “Olympism is a lifestyle and represents a cultural movement, founded on the cornerstones of Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship. It is therefore that the BNOC has chosen to commemorate this through the launch of a national challenge which urges Batswana to move, learn and discover.”
