- IRENE SHONE BG CORRESPONDENT

Jazzlovers are in for a trea, following the release of an eleven track album by the legendary guitarist Kapenda Katuta. The album is inspired by the main wave from the Mp3 recorded at the Masa Hotel during one of Jazz Xchange sessions, years back. Although Jazz fanatics had long insisted on an album, Katuta took his time to redo some of his songs and before going into the studio. The brand new album is dubbed ‘ Live at Masa Square Hotel ( CBD)’. Although new, the album is already gaining momentum as a lot of people appreciate it. “I went back into the original music record studio of Alfredo Mos who worked tirelessly to help bring this project together,” Katuta says, emphasizing that he helped with editing and recording the missing instruments. He has also worked with other legedendary artists including: Lister Boleseng, Andrew Chinganga, Sua Pan, Bonie Keabile on piano, while Tavonga Makotore assisted on percussion and Enock Mbewe on the drums. He is of the view that Jazz music needs absolute attention, if an artist needs to satisfy their fans, which is why he often takes his time and engage other renowned artists. This album comprises of different jazzy sounds in different languages, which Katuta says is a norm in their genre. He has infused languages including Cuban, Spanish and English. One track, ‘ Spanish Vibe’ which he explains as a song romantically played on nylon or classic guitar with an influence of Spanish and Afro Jazz. Bosanova Katanga, is yet another track of Afro and Spanish touch, which he says is a remembrance of his first love heart break. He reiterates that Jazz music is generally an emotional kind of genre which is soothing to the soul, and also allows them as musicians to express themselves. In track number 8, ‘ tuku flavour’, Katuta pay respects to the legendary Oliver Mtukuzi, and emphasizes that they crossed paths together at some points hence he will forever cherish those moments as he has learnt a lot from him. The Congolese guitarist, who has stayed almost whole of his life in Botswana also believes in the notion ‘ home, sweet home’. He has therefore added a few songs that takes his memory back to his home country. The songs ‘ Lumanga’ and ‘ Sandoa’ respectively refers to the ward that he comes from at his home village, and his home district. He believes in diversity and says he tries through music to teach people about different cultures, especially languages. Katuta says that they look forward to presenting the song on social media platforms, through a video. On the other hand, they have also made t- shirts for this album, and he tells BG Style that it is another way of diversifying the brand.
