Makwala enjoying the twilight of his career
He has qualified for the World Athletics Championships 2022
At 34 years of age, Isaac Makwala is certainly enjoying the twilight of his career; the sprinter is not slowing down and does not look like he is in the mood to retire from the sport.
The Badman’s athletics is actually seeking to blaze over as he sets sight to his last World Athletics Championships slated for Oregon, America next year. Makwala has qualified for both the 200m and 400m event at the upcoming championships and he is in good shape to challenge for a medal next year. After battling injuries, for a couple of years, the athlete recovered and moved to his vintage best on the track, he came back and continued to run fiercely. It was during Botswana Athletics Association ( BAA) national championships, where Makwala effortlessly clocked 44.65 seconds to book his plane ticket to Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Ever since, the Tutume native did not look back; he went on to win his first Olympic medal in the 4x400m relay, alongside Bayapo Ndori, Baboloki Thebe and Zibane Ngozi. That was followed by a consistent performance in the Diamond League that seemingly spoiled the retirement plan as fans are more interested in the runner on track more often. Makwala had a very busy month partaking in the Diamond League, taking part in the 400m and 200m in the space of two hours something that many athletes at his age cannot do. The Absa Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour was the last event of the season for Makwala and it took place at
Kasarani Stadium on the 18th September 2021 in Nairobi, Kenya. For him, Nairobi was a climax to a long drawn out season which included the Olympics and the Diamond League after numerous events were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Makwala was keen to secure a qualification for the 2022 World Championships. American Fred Kerley won the men’s 200m in a personal best of 19.76, leading second- placed Isaac Makwala, who smashed 20.06 to make the qualifying time for next year’s world championships in Eugene, Oregon.
