BPC launches bold strategy

- Keikantse Lesemela

Bot swana Power Corporation ( BPC) Chief Executive Officer, David Kgoboko said the corporation has decided to adopt and implement the Mini Business Areas across the Corporation to further take its new strategy, Maduo 26 to employees on the shop floor as the corporation aims to become the net exporter of power in the Southern Africa region.

The five year strategy is premised on key priority areas which includes attaining financial sustainability, achieving zero harm, improving employee experience, asset management, project management and to generate excess power for the corporation to become a net exporter of power into the region.

Launching the strategy on Friday, Kgoboko said they have identified five core values that they believe will create a conducive environment for seamless execution of the strategy. These include Zero Harm to staff, public, and environment, ethical conduct for integrity and zero tolerance for corruption, passion for excellence, people first meaning value to employees, customers, and the communities as well as team player. “These core values represent the attitudes, behaviours, and characters that will be espoused by all at BPC for us to achieve our strategic goals.”

He said BPC will continue to assist Government in its development agenda to increase access to electricity and bring dignity to Batswana. “We will undertake this in line with the Government’s Reset Agenda and support all reforms aimed at improving service delivery to all Batswana.”

Kgoboko also reiterated that BPC will continue to procure goods and services from the private sector in support of meaningful citizen economic empowerment ( CEE). “There are upcoming opportunities for the private sector , especially for citizens - in automation of our distribution network and introduction of renewables in our energy mix” However, data from Statistics Botswana’s Electricity Generation Distribution report for the last quarter of 2021, shows that local electricity generation decreased by 18.9 percent ( 109,686MWH) from the 579,036MWH during the third quarter of 2021 to 469,349 MWH. The decrease is attributed to operational challenges at Morupule B power plant. This resulted in the increase in imported electricity as the local generation of electricity is not adequate to meet domestic demand. According to the figures, Botswana imported 53.7 percent of total electricity distributed during the fourth quarter of 2021. Eskom was the main source of imported electricity at 40.6 percent of total electricity imports. The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited ( ZESCO) accounted for 22.0 percent, while the remaining 17.0, 15.0, 4.0 and 1.4 percent were sourced from Electricidade De Mozambique ( EDM), Southern African Power Pool ( SAPP), Crossborder electricity markets and Nampower, respectively. BPC Chairman, Proffesor Oboetswe Motsamai said the past strategy, Masa2020 was not successfully implemented, for various reasons; therefore the Corporation was unable to achieve the goals set out in that strategy. “We are optimistic that Maduo26 can transform the Corporation and we believe this can be done by focusing on the following key initiatives such as Remediation works on Morupule B Power Station, implementation of an Operation and Maintenance Strategy for MBPS, Development and roll- out of Business Process Management Framework ( Process Mapping & Improvement) among others.”

The formulation process of the new strategy is said to be extensive and inclusive as it entailed engagement of key stakeholders including amongst others, the parent Ministry, customers ( large, medium and households), the BPC Board of Directors, BPC Workers Union and Staff.

He said the board believes that Maduo26 is well crafted to ensure that the organisation performs at its highest level by focusing on the strategic priorities that have been identified. “Our greatest resources as the Corporation are the men and women employed by the organisation. The strategic objectives/ priorities can only be achieved through the efforts of BPC’s workforce through daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly efforts that shall ensure that we, as BPC, power the economy with pride by supplying reliable, safe, competitive, and sustainable electricity’’.
