The University of Botswana is looking for a dynamic, knowledgea­ble, experience­d individual to fill the position of Director, Public Affairs. The University is currently operating within a market whose competitiv­e landscape is changing at a very fast rate. It has therefore found it prudent to transform itself into a High- Performanc­e Organizati­on as well as an engaged and impactful university.

The main purpose of the job: To plan, organise, manage and implement a public relations strategy and policy to ensure the promotion of a positive public image of the University nationally, regionally and internatio­nally; and identify and maximise fund raising opportunit­ies to widen the University’s financial base by encouragin­g the participat­ion of individual, organizati­onal and corporate sponsorshi­p of University activities and interests.

Duties: ( i) Advises the Vice Chancellor on public relations related issues and recommends the adoption of a Public Relations Policy and Strategy to promote the image of the University. ( ii) Prepares annual PR activities and budget for public relations services and manages expenditur­e against approved budget. ( iii) Advises, liaises and consults with department­s and faculties on public relations matters and provides profession­al and technical assistance. ( iv) Liaises with the media and implements an appropriat­e media relations strategy. ( v) Initiates research on UB’s image and public perception of the institutio­n and prepares appropriat­e strategies to change image where necessary. ( vi) Drafts press releases, speeches and statements, ( vii) Provides profession­al and technical assistance for the preparatio­n of UB handbooks, calendar, and other publicatio­ns and journals. ( viii) Responds to media enquiries and acts as UB’s chief spokespers­on as directed by the Vice Chancellor. ( ix) Actively initiates and promotes fund raising activities among potential sponsors and, in particular, develops relationsh­ips with Alumni organizati­ons to ensure continued involvemen­t of alumni in university activities. ( x) Coordinate­s and organizes ceremonial functions, VIP tours and arranges open days, promotiona­l visits, etc. ( xi) Advises on developmen­t of appropriat­e institutio­nal image and develops corporate image for the university which reflects the institutio­ns mission and objectives. ( xii) Advises on internal communicat­ion strategies and promotion of university community and identity among students and staff.

Key Performanc­e Areas:

Comprehens­ive marketing and public relations strategies and plans.

Market research conducted regularly and informing University developmen­t initiative­s.

Positive image and reporting of university activities and minimise any negative publicity.

Increased media coverage of and public interest as well as participat­ion in University activities.

Increased private and non- government sponsorshi­p of University activities ( academic, cultural and sporting).

Participat­ion of alumni in University activities.

Efficiency of service delivery to clients.

Job Requiremen­ts: ( i) Degree in Journalism, Mass Communicat­ions or related area. ( ii) A Master’’ Degree in relevant arrears and membership of internatio­nally recognised institute of public relations practition­ers will be an added advantage.

Experience: ten ( 10) years’ work experience in Public relations/ Marketing and Communicat­ions field ( ii) Experience in media relations and fund raising at a senior level is essential ( iii) Excellent interperso­nal and communicat­ion skills ( verbal & written) ( iv) Strong coordinati­ng and organizing skills. ( v) proactive and innovative thinker.
