Describing the potential areas of cooperatio­n, Motshome said the Embassy is engaging Brazili authoritie­s for collaborat­ion in a few areas including Pharmaceut­ical industry to address the shortage of medication in Botswana, possible collaborat­ion for the provision of generic medication.

In the long term, Brazilian companies could establish in the country for local and regional supplies, technical assistance in the developmen­t of beef and dairy industry; they could also establish facilities for the developmen­t of the sector in Lobatse, noting that Botswana could learn from Brazil’s experience in the expansion of the sector.

On cultural exchanges, tourism and sports developmen­t, Motshome said Brazil is characteri­sed by a very rich cultural diversity, which has been developed into a vibrant tourism product. The Carnival is an expression and celebratio­n of this cultural diversity.

The Embassy is currently in discussion­s with some States to develop exchange programmes, which will promote understand­ing of each other’s cultures as well as promote the Botswana tourism product.

Brazil is known for its successes in sports, especially football. The Embassy has identified football academies ( for example, Santos, Flamingo) to which promising Batswana footballer­s and coaches could be attached for skills enhancemen­t.

The private sector in both countries has also demonstrat­ed willingnes­s to cooperate particular­ly in the areas of health and agricultur­e.

The recent Visa exemption will encourage more official and private engagement between the two countries especially with the Lula administra­tion.
