Teachers, parents worried over Covid-19

- PHATSIMO KAPENG Correspondent

With reports indicating that a high number of cases are being recorded in schools with more than 10 teachers dying in a week across the country, teachers and parents are worried.

As of now the government has not yet announced the vaccination plan for teachers despite the high number of deaths due to COVID-19 related illnesses. The teachers unions have been advocating for their inclusion in the vaccination roll out and other options such as considering the school closure for a certain period of time to allow planning for the way forward.

Students have been identified as the most ignorant group when it comes to observing COVID-19 protocols despite the efforts made by teachers to ensure they adhere to COVID-19 protocols.

It is evident that schools are mostly exposed to the virus as both students and teachers record high numbers of the positive cases across the country.

Teachers decry that they give out their full effort in schools to make sure that COVID-19 protocols are well observed and in return they receive nothing other than headache,

“we try our best as teachers to encourage our students to take care of themselves during this pandemic but the problem starts when they leave school, in most cases you will find them walking in groups along the road with no masks and sharing food. This poses a threat to us teachers and their parents” Said Mr Mashumba.

Parents have also voiced their concern regarding the issue of lack of COVID-19 adherence by their children, “we are fully aware that our children give teachers headache in schools, both teachers and parents preach the same verse encouraging children to take into consideration all the COVID-19 protocols not only at school or at home but everywhere they go because the virus is everywhere” said one of the parents.

Teachers are worried about the situation at schools and they believe somehow the government is turning a blind eye towards them as there are no clear plans yet made by the government to address the situation faced by schools.
