- NNASARETHA KGAMANYANE Correspondent

Oshebeng Makgaka will this year have an independence to remember as sh was on Sunday crowned Miss Independence queen. The young woman won the title in a beauty pageant consisting of fellow 20 beautiful and intelligent young women. Mosa Balesamang scooped the first princess title while Millicent Ramatlhape was crowned the second princess.

In an interview with the pageantry director Gaonyafele Phuti, she said Makgaka will represent Botswana at the Miss Legacy World in South Africa in December. She further explained that Miss Independence Botswana aims to remind young Batswana women who they are, make them appreciate their Setswana culture and inspire them to preserve it for the next coming generations.

“Our first President Sir Seretse Khama used to say a nation without a culture is a lost nation. We conducted our auditions in May where ladies aged between 17 and 27 where allowed to join the pageant. We had no weight or height restrictions. We started with 30 contestants. We had a fashion show, culture day and project presentation where contestants were given tasks and we had to trimmed them down to top 20,” she said.

Furthermore, Phuti added that COVID-19 greatly affected them, as they could not make profits due to the protocols and guidelines, which limited the number of people partaking at such events. She added that even though a number of people showed interest in going to the event, only a few were able to take part whilst a number of them could not as they had to abide by the protocols.
