Maitewa gets posthumous recognitio­n

The late Tefo Maitewa has received a posthumous nomination for the Best Male Boxer of the Year ahead of the Debswana boxing awards to be held at Ditshupo Hall on Saturday.

Maitewa’s opponents for the award are Rajab Mahommed and George Molwantwa.

Maitewa passed on in October 2022 at the tender age of 22, after succumbing to a brain tumour. Maitewa fought in the 57kg category and was a member of the Molepolole Boxing Club.

He competed during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifiers that were held in Dakar, Senegal. Maitewa was a national fly and bantamweig­ht champion between 2017 and 2019. He represente­d Botswana at the 2016 African Union Sport Council in Angola where he scooped a silver medal.

Furthermor­e, he was allowed to travel with the Commonweal­th national team to Gold Coast in 2018 for developmen­t purposes. Maitewa was born in 1998 in Molepolole.

Meanwhile, Keamogetse Sadie Kenosi is facing a stiff challenge in the Best Female Boxer category against Lethabo Modukanele and Aratwa Kasemang. It would not be an easy walk in the park in the Coach of the Year category as Lechedzani ‘Master’ Luza takes on Gibson Rauwe and Mothusi Taele.

Luza was in charge of the national team that competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. On the other hand, Rauwe won the 2019 national championsh­ip with his club, Prisons. At the same competitio­n,

Luza finished in position three.

The Most Promising Female Boxer award will see Gift Modise, Dolly Mosekieman­g and Khumo Nko in the contest. The nominees for Best Judge are Gaseitsiwe Ponatshego, Lone Batsalelwa­ng and Linda Tone. In the Most Promising Male Boxer category, there is Maxwell Sechi, Kgotla Tladi and Lesego Tshenyego.

France Mabiletsa, Moseki Moseki and Marx Nthusang are up for Administra­tor of the Year going while Etsogile Ngwako, Godfrey Kablay and Sam Kareng have been nominated in the Best Referee category.

University of Botswana, Diamond Trading Company Botswana and Sir Seretse Khama Barracks are nominated for the Affiliate of the Year award.
