GU closes in as Galaxy cracks

- KABELO BORANABI Correspondent

Defending champions, Gaborone United is enjoying log leaders, Jwaneng Galaxy’s recent slump in form as the gap has closed to just five points. Galaxy have failed to collect maximum points in recent matches and the Reds have duly capitalised as they have moved to just within five points with four rounds of games to be played. On Sunday afternoon, the Reds will try and reduce the gap as they take on relegation-threatened, Mogoditshane Fighters at the National Stadium.

In midweek, GU came from 1-0 down to beat Sua Flamingoes 3-1 at the National Stadium. The Reds will look for the same resilience as they face the Samba Boys. The team has also been boosted by the return of head coach, Pontsho Moloi who has been out serving suspension. Moyagoleele have enjoyed seven straight wins against their weekend’s opponents scoring 21 goals in the process while Fighters have only found the back of the net on three occasions. In the last five games, GU has won three times, lost one and played to a draw once and are among the best teams in recent form.

On the opposite end, the fight for Fighters is to survive relegation. A defeat to GU will condemn Fighters to the dusty second-tier league football grounds. It is a daunting task to lift the

Samba Boys’ morale as they face a team that they have not won against in the last seven encounters. Fighters have collected just a point from the last five games and their route to the lower division looks much confirmed. Galaxy will watch the tie with a keen eye as they look to pull away from GU.

The Galaxy Stars will be in action at the Galaxy Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face Police XI. The Jungle Kings have proven to be an unpredictable side and Morena Ramoreboli should be concerned.

Galaxy dropped points on two consecutive occasions for the first time since the start of the season and an 11th-hour panic will not aid the team’s championship quest. Police XI will not be an easy side to toss over as they also look to boost their top-half chances.

In other games, Masitaoka and BDF XI will meet for the second consecutive weekend at the Molepolole Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Holy Ghost and Prisons XI battle for crucial points at the Otse Stadium while long-term rivals, Township Rollers and Extension Gunners clash at the Lobatse Sports Complex. On Sunday afternoon, Sua Flamingoes welcome Eleven Angels at the Sowa Town Council Stadium while Security Systems visit Nico United at the Sam Sono. All the games will kick off at 3pm.
