Back in 2018, the nation was shocked to learn of the news that a woman’s body was found beheaded in Tlokweng. Months later the police made another shocking discovery as a skull was found by some manual workers at Gaborone’s Block 7, not far from her parents’ home. At the time, Mapitse had already been buried without her head, her family had to endure further grief.

Since the matter was withdrawn by the State, it has never been clear what exactly happened to Mapitse. Mmegi is in possession of a statement of the friend who is possibly one of the few people who last saw Mapitse alive.

According to the statement disposed by her friend, (names known to this publication) she and Mapitse were friends and neighbours who had known each other for many years. The friend confirms that she was with Mapitse on Sunday

Bonolo Elizabeth Mapitse (Kerekang) died in the most gruesome way. She was found beheaded in Tlokweng, whilst the State has since withdrawn the case against her murder suspected boyfriend, Simon Kgowe with liberty to reinstate.

staffer gleans on statement of the woman friend who was last to see the deceased

July 29, 2018. She says Mapitse had visited her boyfriend and the man who is now accused of killing her, Simon Gaza Kgowe at his house in Block 3.

She further says the deceased had wanted the friends to go to church on that day but unfortunately she found her already drinking. The pair then decided not to go to church and they drank, Black Label beer, together.

She further says on top of the alcohol the two friends, as was their norm, indulged in drugs, “On top of the beer we also took some crack cocaine which we contributed and bought.” She further told the police that the deceased was a sex worker. “At around 3pm – 4pm, Bonolo (Mapitse) left my place saying she is going to hustle at Gaborone West shops by the police. We also prostitute, so hustling meant that she will be selling her body by the shops,” the statement reads.

According to the witness the deceased left her handbag by her place and only took her phone. She says she was wearing a black and white Soviet sneaker and a black two-piece tracksuit.

Mapitse’s friend also says she was to return the same evening, but that would be the last time she saw her friend alive. She says she tried calling her phone but it rang unanswered. The next day, on Monday she heard rumours around the neighbourhood that an unidentified woman was found beheaded in Tlokweng.
