Phetso’s future looks bright

- NNASARETHA KGAMANYANE Correspondent

Recently, a group of established local comedians pledged to support one of the local upcoming comedians who want to experience Stand Up Comedy at a higher level. They chose two young brilliant comedians, Comedian Phetso and Tumelo Moilwa also known as Depay.

However, the duo decided among themselves that Comedian Phetso whose birth names are Phetso Oabile from Serowe should benefit from the pledge. In an interview with Arts&Culture, he said Walker Dibe gave him the chance to share the stage with international comedians where some of them promised him more shows at their countries of Lesotho and Eswatini.

He added that he found out that Dibe organised the show with Major Moves Comedy BW with his partner Gee Spot where he found a slot and was able to charm international comedians.

“Next year I will get the chance to perform abroad. I am just waiting for calls from international comedians. I will be sharing the stage with Dr Shakes, Lilaphalapha and also sharing the stage with Roni Modimola whom I look up to. Before I started comedy, I used to watch his comedy a lot. He is my role model. However,

during the Major Moves Comedy show, I was under pressure despite being the first comedian to go on stage because I was performing alongside giant comedians but with the talent I managed to leave them in stitches,” he confidently announced.

Furthermore, he sent credits to Local is Lekker, a local clothing brand for making sure that he went on stage looking good. He added that he was willing to work a lot with them. He said he wants to wear their the brand all the time while making people laugh. His decision of being a stand up comedian was inspired by his love for renowned stand up comedians he grew up adoring such as Jonny Pula and Triccs, who always perform stand up on their pages on Facebook. Even though he completed his BGCSE last year, the young comedian said he started his career in comedy last year around February while doing Form Five.

“Comedy made me look at the world in a different creative way. It made me to make jokes out of my pain, which gives me joy and confidence. The first comedian to watch performing stand up comedy is Vhalloyd and the most inspiration comes from Jonny Pula, Triccs, Bambino and Boldwin Bals, all being members of the Gaborone Comedy Club. I do Stand Up comedy most of the time and skits videos but I am more funny live, not in videos,” he explained. Furthermore, he explained that he is a member of the Gaborone Comedy Club where other comedians support him whenever he needed them. He stated that every time he goes off stage they motivate him to keep up the good work. He also said he scooped position three during the President’s Day Competitions in 2022 even though it was his first time joining the competitions.
