- WILLIE O’BRIEN: Bridging Expertise in Cattle Farming and HR

From the fields of the Makopane district to the boardrooms of corporate South Africa, Mr. Willie O’Brien’s journey reflects a harmonious blend of passion and professionalism. Raised on a cattle farm, O’Brien’s roots in animal husbandry run deep, complemented by his academic pursuits in psychology and Sepedi at RAU (now UJ).

Transitioning seamlessly into the realm of human resources, O’Brien earned recognition as an internationally acclaimed HR practitioner, specializing in Change Management. His tenure at Eskom, marked by a focus on leadership development and effective team functioning, solidified his reputation as a seasoned HR professional.

However, O’Brien’s heart remained tethered to his agricultural origins. Delving into artificial insemination and pregnancy testing in 1975, he laid the groundwork for future innovations. In 1997, the establishment of the Semmental stud marked a pivotal moment, where AI techniques were leveraged to elevate herd quality.

Collaborating with Embryo Plus ushered in a new era of cattle improvement, with O’Brien spearheading initiatives like embryo flushing and in vitro processes. His dedication to advancing cattle farming extends beyond his own endeavors, as evidenced by his role as a senior judge and board member of the Semmentaler Breeding Society.

Outside the agricultural sphere, O’Brien shares his expertise through motivational talks and HR consultations, bridging the gap between two seemingly disparate domains. Whether imparting knowledge on effective cattle farming or providing hands-on guidance, O’Brien’s commitment to excellence resonates across borders, enriching both the agricultural and human resources sectors.

KUSHATHA MOESI: Young Farmer

I am a 27 year old young lady who has been actively exploring the agriculture industry for 7 years now. I was particularly captured by livestock farming as a result of growing up in a family offarmers who exposed me to the raw & traditional way of doing things.

My journey started off with backyard rabbit, chicken & quail farming and eventually graduatedto small-stock (sheep & goats) at the ranch. Being captivated by cattle was an inevitable eventwhich subsequently led to me managing our cattle herd of 350 on a full time basis. I now performArtificial Insemination on our cattle as a way to improve the genetics we have.

Being a part of farmers associations such as Botswana Rabbit Farmers Association, MmashoroRanchers & Farmers Association & African Women Farmers Alliance increases my knowledgethrough the constant

networking & easy access to other key farmers.
