Transforming Livestock Sector Through Technology and Government Initiatives
The convergence of technology and government initiatives presents a promising outlook for Botswana’s livestock sector.
This was apparent at the official opening of the Sandveld Association Field Day in Rambobo Ranch which was held under the theme “Sustainable and profitable livestock farming practices through maximization of ranch carrying capacity, including introduction of agro technologies”, hosted by Mr. Gokatweng Coach Tshekiso.
By embracing innovation, fostering partnerships, and investing in research and development, stakeholders aim to unlock the sector’s full potential and drive sustainable growth in the economy.
Mr. Coach Tshekiso shed light on the pivotal factors necessary for the livestock sector’s prosperity. Tshekiso emphasized the critical pillars: enabling investment environment, enhanced utilization of technology, increased investment in research and development, and fostering a mindset change towards livestock farming practices. Despite the potential presented by grazing animals on natural pastures to attract niche markets, the sector faces numerous challenges. Veld fires, lack of infrastructure, gaps in animal health support, restrictive market regulations, and limited grazing land constrain its capacity to contribute meaningfully to the economy.
Recognizing these challenges, stakeholders called upon the government to create an enabling investment environment conducive to reducing costs, minimizing risks, attracting private sector investment, and enhancing market access. Investment in research and development is also crucial for unlocking the sector’s potential contribution to Botswana’s socio-economic transformation, as outlined in Vision 2036.
Gabolekwe Tlogelang, Chairman of the Sandveld Ranchers Association said experience from the SRA Field Days is a long-term mark on how livestock must be managed.
He stated that a changed approach to the structure of continuous interactions is necessary to enable introduction of more practical discussions relating to technology use in the sector, improvements in livestock production and management and practical on-site presentations to improve breed quality.
In response, the government, led by Fidelis Molao, Minister of Agriculture, has initiated various programs to support agricultural development. These include Temo Letlotlo and Thuo
Letlotlo programs, Livestock Management, and Infrastructure Development (LIMID), Revised Artificial Insemination Program, and Botswana Animal Identification and Traceability System (BAITS). These initiatives aim to empower farmers, enhance market compliance, and facilitate sustainable growth in the sector. Moreover, the government is leveraging technology to drive innovation in livestock management.
Through partnerships with organizations like the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Botswana is transforming small stock farming with smart production and management systems at the Lobu Smallstock Farm. These initiatives, including data management systems, animal health monitoring, and online auctions, aim to improve productivity and efficiency in the sector. BTC, Botswana’s leading telecommunications provider, is also playing a vital role in advancing technology adoption among livestock farmers. With satellite internet solutions tailored to the needs of remote agricultural areas, BTC enables farmers to access real-time data, optimize resource allocation, and improve decisionmaking. Additionally, BTC offers value-added services such as fixed voice lines, Wi-Fi access points, and cloud storage, further enhancing connectivity and productivity on farms.
