The teaching fraternity is once again fuming over a circulating video on social media showing a student of Ngwaketse Junior Secondary School in Kanye assaulting another.

In the video, the boy is seen landing hot slaps on the girl and asking her why she was provoking and making fun of him in class, and even calling teachers on him.

The helpless girl tried in vain to block the slaps as they landed on her cheeks and head. She sobbed loudly and only let out a weak “Npetse hela gotlhe, npetse,” translated to, ‘just beat me as much as you can.’

A voice, presumably of another student who filmed the whole scene is then heard asking if the girl was being beaten because she refused to give out her p***sy.

The School Head Maipelo Maboa confirmed knowing both students.

“We are still investigating the matter, we want to get to the bottom of it all, the video only surfaced this past Tuesday and we are shocked and embarrassed to admit that the said students are one of us,” Maboa said.

The headmaster said both were Form 3 students who just finished writing their final Junior Certificate Examinations. They wonder what could have gone wrong between the two that led to the girl being beaten.

Meanwhile, this publication has established that the boy in question has for the longest period been a bully of repute. Although the headmaster was cagey with details, she did not deny that that the boy was troublesome.

Teachers at the school said he had always bullied both students and teachers and was always in trouble. They said efforts to reform him did not bear any fruits.

One teacher claiming to be a victim of his threats and humiliations said the boy once threatened to hit him with a broomstick in full view of the entire school. Many feared him and went on to suffer in silence.

Meanwhile, it is the distasteful statements and the violent scenes that have left the teaching fraternity infuriated. This is one of the many cases that they have long complained about, asking the government to intervene as lawlessness continues to take centre stage in schools.

The fraternity is calling for government to allow them to discipline such students the best way possible.

“You should do away with dictating how many strokes we give to them, let us thrash these children as it was done in the past, they are now decaying,” said a worried teacher.

They also argued that abuse in schools was rife and that it is high time government stops handling such issues with kid gloves.

Minister Fidelis Molao of Basic Education ministry recently expressed concern at the wayward behaviour of students in schools. He called for swift punishment for those who take part in the violence.

Molao was speaking on the backdrop of a series of violent acts that involved the beating of a teacher in Moshupa, who was left with torn trousers and without shoes.
