Cresta embraces ecotourism

- BY ANDREW MARAMWIDZE

As part of efforts to ensure more ecotourism ambiance and sustainability at its hotels across the country, Cresta Marakanelo has embarked on various initiatives to support the project.

The Group’s Managing Director, Mokwena Morulane said the company is conscious on its impact to the environment. “Sustainability and green revolution is upon us; we cannot avoid it. It is a responsible thing to do,” said Morulane. This year, the company has also embarked on an intensive tree planting that will see the company plant 10 000 trees by 2020, on its properties across the country.“Our intention is being green and associated with anything that says sustainability is our core. It is important to narture the environment for us and generations to come,” said Morulane.

In addition, Cresta Marakanelo has also started conservation farming, using kitchen waste, grass and leaves, which are turned into useful composite. The compost is from the biodegradable materials from the kitchen and earth worms and create fertile soil for plants.

Commenting on Cresta Marakanelo’s intensified ecotourism initiatives, Director of Forestry Baitshepi Hill said it is very important that all industry players take an active role in harmonizing the needs between development and forest conservation to enable the future generations to benefit from the fruits of this very earth.

“In the recent times, our country has come under scrutiny by certain international groups challenging our conservation agenda. It is really initiatives such as this large-scale tree planting that we need to see more of; to showcase our collective commitment, as a country, to this agenda,” said Hill.
