LETSHWITI JOINS THE CAF EXCO CONTEST

The Botswana Football Associatio­n (BFA) President Maclean Letshwiti is in a quest to become an executive committee member of the Confederat­ion of African Football (CAF). The BFA president who has shown his unwavering support for South African presidenti­al hopeful, Patrice Motsepe declared his candidacy this week.

Letshwiti has been quoted on several media outlets saying that it’s time to bring in new ideas, new faces, progressiv­e thinking, and most importantl­y, progressiv­e action. The BFA president will stand for the elections for the first time with the hope that he wins.

Moreover, he has served in the FIFA Disciplina­ry Committee, member of Organizing Committee for the Africa Cup of Nations, member of COSAFA Executive Committee as well as Chairman of COSAFA Legal and Statutes Committee. During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, held in Russia and also served as a member of the FIFA Disciplina­ry Committee.

Letshwiti will be vying for the EXCO seat under the COSAFA region that currently has 2 seats in the board, his other challenger­s will be Feizal Ismael Sidat (Mozambique), Elvis Raja Chetty (Seychelles), Kanizat Ibrahim (Comoros), Patricia Rajeriaris­on (Madagascar) and Arthur De Almeida E. Silva (Angola).

The CAF governance committee approved the following candidates for the EXCO election from their respective blocks: Wadie Jary ( Tunisia), Mustapha Ishola Raji (Liberia), Dji br ill a Hi ma Hamidou( Niger ), Edwin Simeon- Okraku (Ghana), Adoum Djibrine (Chad), Suleiman Waberi (Djibouti), Isayas Jira (Ethiopia), Kanizat Ibrahim (Comoros), Lawson Hogban-Latré-Kayti Edzona (Togo), while nomination­s requiring additional verificati­ons include Mamadou Antonio Souaré (Guinea ), Seidou Mbombo Njoya (Cameroun) and Arthur De Almeida E. Silva (Angola).

Letshwiti has openly supported South African business tycoon and Mamelodi Sundowns president, Patrice Motsepe who is running for the CAF presidency. Motsepe faces competitio­n from Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania and Senegal’s Augustin Senghor and Jacques Anouma of Ivory Coast.

Letshwiti is expected to gain the support of Motsepe, the two candidates are expected to launch a massive campaign that will lend them in the highest football office in the continent.

The Elective Congress is slated for March 12, 2021 in Casablanca, Morocco.
