Nkobolo, Thebe accident investigations complete
An investigation into what really transpired during the Onkabetse Nkobolo and Baboloki Thebe car accident has been concluded and submitted to the Botswana Athletics Association(BAA). While on national team camp last year in preparation for Olympics, the duo sneaked out during one night but unfortunately for them they got involved in a car accident which left Nkobolo badly injured and was admitted in a hospital for few months while Thebe was slapped witha reckless driving charge by the police. Following that, BAA authorized an investigation to try to get to the bottom of the issue and try to establish who was at fault in the incident.
Though the investigation took forever to complete this publication has learnt that the inquiry report was wrapped up and submitted to the BAA offices before close of business for festive holidays. Despite the BAA having the document on their hands, they are yet to deliberate on the findings and call the duo for a disciplinary hearing. In addition, the association doesn’t seem to be in rush to share the contents of the report as well as disciplinary proceedings. However, according to some sources close to the developments BAA, might be dragging their feet because the report is likely to pinpoint them for negligence.
“The report is finished but not released yet, so we can’t discuss it. But what I can say is that it took so long because of lack of funds and frequent lockdowns which disrupted schedules of interviews during facts gathering,” said BAA Vice president–Administration, Oabona Theetso in aninterview with this publication. It remains to be seen if the BAA and Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) will impose heavy punishment on the two 400m stars since the gravity of their offense will be determined by the report findings and recommendations.
“Incidents happened in the past but this is the first of its kind,” Theetso said.
