Darts hold virtual indaba

- BY KABELO GADISE

The Botswana Darts Association is expected to hold its elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) this weekend. The meeting was initially set for this past February with several executive positions being up for grabs.

The AGM was eventually postponed due financial reasons and the association has now resolved to hold the meeting by virtual means. Speaking to Sun Sport this week mouthpiece Thato Maphorisa said, “Initially the AGM was supposed to be hosted earlier this year but it was eventually postponed because we couldn’t get funding from the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC). Following the postponement the association has been working around the clock to find suitable ways to host the AGM.” “We have decided that we will host the AGM virtually since we could not host it physically. This means all regions will be expected to have to provide their own data in order to attend the AGM by virtual means, which is a lot cheaper than hosting it physically.” Consequently Maphorisa said they have been training their delegates on attending virtually the AGM this weekend.”We want to hold the AGM and get people in office so that they can now start working. We need to deliver because we have been affected by the pandemic and we know if the government gives competitions the green light we will be one of the first codes to start.” Meanwhile the presidential position will not be contested at this election which means the incumbent being Buyani Zongwani will see out another term. In addition public relations and recording secretary positions will be not contested for in the coming elections. The vice president position is expected to be a three way battle between Moitshupi Seomile, Sam Noga and Percyvaal Bagwasi while Mothusi Moakofi and Kagiso Kitso battles it out in the position of Secretary General among other fiercer battles. In recent years the association has tried to take darts to the people by introducing the sport to schools and having junior teams play in regional competitions, that is U15, U18 and U25. So far the junior categories have proven to be good for development. The past three years have seen Botswana performing well in junior categories, finishing in top 3.In addition Maphorisa said there are currently several strategies in place to attract some sponsors and increasing participation in the game.
