NO WORRIES Masisi not bothered by factions

Only thing that worries him is Corona

- BY NICHOLAS MOKWENA

President Mokgweetsi Masisi says he is not bothered by claims of emergence of factions within the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

He explained that as the leader of the party, he sleeps peacefully at night because factions are nothing new in the BDP.

The president’s statement comes at a time when the media has reported that factions have emerged within the party and threaten the organisation’s stability.

According to BDP sources, the factions which have the backing of some of the cabinet

ministers and backbench are driven by those who feel sidelined and sabotaged by the party leadership.

“The elders have been asking me how I am doing. I told them I sleep peacefully. Factions have been there even before me. All the presidents before me had factions in existence during their time.

“I am not surprised that there could be factions during my tenure. There used to be Big Five; A-Team; BarataPhathi and Kgola Disana. There is nothing new here. So, I am not bothered.

“I have trust in all those that I am working with. The only thing that makes me not to have a peaceful sleep is Corona virus”, Masisi told a BDP leadership Retreat on

Saturday.

He said the only problem is that because the party is going for its elective congress, people are now unsettled. Masisi said the only difference now is the advent of social media, which helps spread fake news.

He said even mainstream media misinform the nation about what is happening in the BDP. He called on BDP members to disregard media reports which are meant to divide the party.

Masisi stated that ultimately, they should increase their representation at Parliament with high numbers. He said as leaders they have to speak in clear terms and in one voice so that Batswana will continue for follow

them.

According to Masisi all is well within the BDP even though there are few disturbing issues which need to be attended. He said even though the party members may differ they should not fight each other, break or divide the party.

“When things get out of hand you have to consult. You have to consult even the elders so that we put things back on track.

“Consultation is very key, which is why when we leave from this retreat then we will be united so that when a Motswana at home hears our united voice they would choose to follow us as the BDP”, the party president said.
