SECOND SUICIDE ON FACEBOOK

Police investigate another LIVE death

- BY NEO KOLANTSHO

Botswana Police Service (BPS) is investigating a case of a young man who was seen on social media early this week seemingly committing suicide.

The video sent shockwaves across the country as it ended with sounds of the young man gasping for air while a shadow of his body showed that he was suspended in the air.

Those able to identify the man are confused and in a horrifying state. “Yes I know him, he is just a young man we know here in Charles Hill, we do not know where he is, his phones are off also his close friends seem to be equally in the dark,” a concerned Charles Hill resident said. By Tuesday evening, Charles Hill station commander Lefa Kareng said they were still searching for the man. “My team is on the ground to find if there is anything of that sort,” he said. Meanwhile, doubting residents say the video is nothing else but a sick prank. They allege that the man is well and not dead as he wants some to believe. They claim to have met him on Tuesday morning. “I cannot comment much, for now, it is a sensitive matter which we need to approach with caution and get to the bottom of it. But if it was a joke, he is likely to be charged with common nuisance,” Kareng said. The video comes a few weeks after Phenyo Godfrey also allegedly hanged himself live on social media in Ledumang, Gaborone. Godfrey was seen on the live video hanging by the neck until he breathed his last. Those who saw the video were unable to take the images out of their mind. They complained of nightmares and shock. Police Spokesperson Dipheko Motube was unable to state if they have any laws to regulate what can or cannot be shared publicly on social media. “I cannot give a response to the matter now,” he said.
