Suspicions raised as Lutheran Church burns down
The Lutheran Church of Southern Africa’s worship hall in Kanye mysteriously caught fire this past weekend.
According to Kanye Police boss Mmoloki Mogale, they are still trying to understand what could have caused the fire.
“We are really trying to understand what could have transpired but we have nothing concrete,” he said. A worried Mogale revealed that the same church burnt down a few years ago, saying it is somewhat a strange occurrence. “Luckily nothing much was destroyed only some cabinets and tables that were in there,” he said. Meanwhile, according to reliable information reaching The Midweek Sun, the church congregation is bitterly divided. There is no peace at Lutheran church to a point that some have even been accused of theft. One high-ranking church member is accused of stealing church money amounting to P500 000. Mogale confirmed investigating the matter. “Yes the case has been registered with us and we are doing our best to dig out the truth,” he said. When reached, the president of Botswana Council of Churches Metlhayotlhe Beleme said he was not aware of unrest at the Kanye church branch. “I am also not aware that the church burnt down recently. I will have to gather information on it first,” he said. The Lutheran Church of Southern Africa (ELCSA) is not to be confused with the Evangelist Lutheran Church of Botswana (ELCB). The two are separate and independent entities following a bitter split in the late 1970s following internal conflicts. Before the split, there was only ELCSA in Botswana and following the internal squabbles, a separate body to be called ELCB was formed following a High Court order after the two warring parties fought over property.
