- BY KEIKANTSE LESEMELA

Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTC) has been recognised as the best performer in cyber security solutions and being the most certified partner of the year by Fortinet.

The corporation scooped three prestigious awards at the Africa Virtual Security Day 2021 which include, Best Growth of the Year 2020, Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP), Partner of the Year 2020 and Most Certified Partner of the year 2020 in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The awards are a recognition of sterling performance displayed by organizations that have partnered with Fortinet to use and resell Fortinet business solutions to enterprises.

BTC, through Fortinet, provides solutions and mitigation measures that companies in different industries can deploy to protect against any Cyber threats.

BTC Chief Operations Officer, Aldrin Sivako said the awards are testament to the commitment that BTC has taken to offer security solutions to Batswana and enterprises, as the demand for connectivity has risen due to the challenges brought by the covid-19 pandemic. He explained that the rise in the usage of the internet also brought concerns around security, data privacy and data protection. “As the world is transforming and everything is moving to the internet, companies are also adapting to an operating model in which working from home has become the ‘new normal’, and they are forced to accelerate their digital transformation; as a result, cybersecurity has become an area of interest,” he said. Sivako highlighted that to keep up with changing security risks, a more proactive and adaptive approach is necessary. “It is paramount for companies to have a ’cyber-safe’ working environment, thus protecting sensitive data and guarding against cyber attacks and ensuring that the company remains safe in the midst of any workplace changes or adoption of new technologies,” he said.

To achieve this, BTC has taken a deliberate move to skill up its manpower around cybersecurity and best practice on how to prevent cyber attacks.

Sivako explained that BTC offers a multilayered security, a security system that uses numerous components to shield multiple levels or operational layers, many of which are used to mitigate, delay or prevent threats. He said that security can be tailored and offered to all segments and is not limited, “BTC also provides Security as a service (SECaaS), and this is a service that can be integrated into any BTC product portfolio based on customers requirement.”

Furthermore, Sivako highlighted that security as a service is a cloud based service and customers using the service do not have to invest on hardware as it is hosted at the BTC Sentlhaga data centre and the service is fully managed by BTC on the customers’ behalf. “Hosting SecaaS at Sentlhaga Center allows for quick deployment at minimal costs to the customers as there is no need for an onsite deployment of equipment”, explained Sivako. BTC SecaaS is available to both Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMES) and Enterprise customers. He further explained that, “the service appeals to customers who are adopting outsourced Information Communication Technology (ICT) models and have both remote and mobile users who need to access company critical applications and data on the move.” He concluded by stating that most companies are adopting a work from home model and therefore protecting company information becomes critical,” adding that “BTC has the right solutions for companies across different industries.”
