Boxing action returns this weekend
of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) this weekend.
In an interview with Sun Sports, newly elected BoBA spokesperson, Moitshepi Nkabiti said the tournament will be held without spectators. “We had already planned the tournament for Saturday even before the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) announced that spectators could return to venues,” Nkabiti said.
“We expect to welcome boxing fans at the next tournament later in the year.” Furthermore, the BoBA mouthpiece said they expect athletes and their teams to travel from across the country to compete at the tournament. “We are waiting for different clubs to send names so that we can do the matching for the tournament. We can only confirm the names of the athletes once we have received them.” In addition, Nkabiti said they expect all the athletes competing at the tournament to provide results of their latest Covid-19 PCR test results. Quizzed on whether the Boxing Association is concerned about the condition and fitness of athletes following a long layoff, Nkabiti said: “It is only the BoBA technical team that will be able to establish the status of the athletes.”
Meanwhile, the Association executive committee has resolved not to send a team to participate at the world championships slated for Serbia between October and November. “The reaIn
sons being that we want to start with local competitions/ activities,” a statement from BoBA reads. Furthermore, BoBA is currently preparing a team that will compete at the AUSC Region 5 Games. Preparations are still underway
as the intention was to two concurrent camps for boxers in the North and South respectively during weekends so that there is continuity as most of them are students and preparing for their exams.
