HOSTELS OF SEX Authorities wary of too much sex, drugs in school dormitories

Completing students are smoking, drinking and sexing

Adeeply worried Southern Region Director, Acronews Maseko is concerned about the unruly behaviour of students in Goodhope Senior Secondary

School.

This is despite all efforts made to bring order to the school. They have consulted all stakeholders including village leadership and parents and tried different approaches but it seems things are getting worse by the day.

So bad is the situation that even other students who came to the school with the aim of getting an education are affected. These innocent students also end up dumping books for drugs and sex.

Maseko said the situation at the school is tough and the students do not listen to anyone. They have tried seeking the intervention of the police but things remain the same.

Students have reduced school management to nonentities while drugs and substance abuse are the order of the day. The students demand to be allowed to see their sexual partners in peace at the dormitories, if not, chaos erupts.

“It is sad, they come and just say ‘so and so is my girl or my man and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.’ They are not bothered by the school rules, they do as they please,” he said.

This past week, there were complaints raised by some parents that students were losing valuables such as toiletry, food, and clothing day in and day out.

It is suspected that the items were stolen by students that are hell-bent on terrorising the school, to bring disorder and frustrate teachers.

Parents are complaining that they can no longer keep up. Their children can’t even find their school uniforms. Having to buy valuables for their children on a daily basis is proving expensive and an inconvenience, they cry.

“I am not happy with some parents. They shower children with huge sums of money. Thus, they are able to buy drugs and alcohol leading to them misbehaving in school,” Maseko complained.

Maseko said that students are wellfed in school so there is no need for them to be given money for food. They are not against pocket money but plead that it is not too much, as it goes to their heads.

He added that just last week they received a report that Goodhope Senior Secondary School students had thrown stones at a Police van.

“We are struggling with that school, They get arrested but don’t learn. It is a large school with over 1 500 students. We admit students from all over the country such as Molepolole and its catchment area, Jwaneng, Mabutsane, Khakhea, and Maokane.

Parents Teachers Association (PTA) Secretary Chika Victor Liwena said it is not only Goodhope that is experiencing such headaches, but that cases of indiscipline in schools cut across the country.

Liwena said that there are too many cases involving student sex associated with boarding students in schools.

If they are not having sex in dormitories, they sneak out to pleasure older men or women outside the school premises. This seems to be mostly affecting completing classes.

A concerned Liwena told The Midweek Sun that students mostly become big-headed and misbehave when they realise that they will soon be completing school.

“Some are not even writing exams, they are out there drinking and smoking dagga. They are literally forced back into school but clearly, they are not interested.

“We see a lot of mischief around this time. Just recently, Form 3 students in one school were caught crawling through the ceiling in an attempt to steal laptops from one of the school labs,” he said.

Sadly, some parents are not bothered, they allow their own children to do as they please which makes it hard for school management to discipline children effectively.
