CELEBRATING THE DIVERSITY OF ART

Mural artist gives spaces a facelift

- BY KELETSO THOBEGA

Mural artist Kelagamang Khuwe, is making strides with his eyecatching brilliant art. His work is clean, skillful and seamless. The perfect shapes and neat designs of his art work are admirable. While he gifted at drawing, sketching and painting, Khuwe is currently focused on murals (wall paintings).

The Gaborone based artist said that he developed interest in art as a boy, growing up in Tonota, where he was born and hails from.

He explained that he discovered his love for art during CAPA lessons in primary school, and it became his favourite subject, and he looked for any opportunity to refine his skill and talent. “During other lessons that included drawings such as Social studies, I didn’t mind assisting other learners with map drawings for example, because it was my way of practising .This is actually the main reason that my skills are flawless - I practised a lot.”

As he started growing as an artist, Khuwe became a member of Thapong Visual Arts Centre and started entering President Day Art competitions three years ago. He said as he explored his artistry, he developed interest in murals and steadily improved his craft as he kept refining his talent.

Khuwe said for him, art doesn’t only mean self-expression but also bringing something fresh and new to the art industry. “I believe in being unique and bringing a diverse element to my art, through hard work and passion. I believe that this will give me longevity and one day I will be recognised for my compelling and exceptional art,” he said. The passionate young artist said there has been positive reception to his work so far. ”There are countless clients who are interested in getting their walls decorated with my exceptional mural designs. People love how the designs can lift the appearance of a room with my art work.” He explained that some want the murals but don’t own the property that they live in, so for those renting out, he always recommends that they have their murals painted on canvas boards.

“Canvas boards are movable even though it can devastate the beauty of the design, it is just as beautiful as an original done on the wall,” he said.

Director of Shefix Beauty, Tsaone Thembo, aspires to make strides in the beauty industry through her skill for achieving flawless skin. Thembo recently told Vibe that she started out as a hairstylist by profession, and every time she finished styling a client, she noticed that a woman’s look is often incomplete without a touch of make-up. She said that she subsequently developed interest in make-up artistry and that is pretty much how she started in her journey of beautifying women who want to enhance their looks and turn heads.

Thembo, who is a self-taught makeup artist, shared that she gets inspiration from YouTube and other big makeup gurus in Botswana.

“I used to do my own makeup and would get a lot of compliments from friends and relatives, and some would even ask me to do them, and some ask for tutorials. I then trained myself more and came up with my own brand name to start trading,” she said.

Thembo explained that she does glam makeup and her target market now is ladies also for events such as weddings, parties, and graduations. She said the business is growing steadily as she has many customers for events, some who even solicit her services for photo shoots.

She said that Batswana are supportive of her craft, adding that she no longer does makeup on just close family and friends as she now gets gigs from even people she does not know, who have caught heed of her talent.

Thembo encouraged youth who want to pursue makeup as a career to start with the little make-up kit they have and grow from there. She said patience and resilience are also important. “It is important to work hard and never give up your their dreams,” she said.
