High ranking BDP politician implicated in murder case
A Maun-based Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) politician, whose names have been withheld, is being investigated for murder. According to village leadership sources, the politician and a few others were taken in for questioning this past weekend after allegedly killing a man they suspected to have stolen and killed a donkey belonging to a close friend of theirs. Infuriated and fed up with the many cases of livestock theft in the area, the politician and his friends hunted down the deceased man and confronted him. A fight ensued and the man tried defending himself but succumbed to the injurious blows of the angry livestock owners a few hours later at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital. “Livestock theft is high around here, the politician and his friends confronted the deceased and a fight ensued. He died and they now find themselves with a murder case on their hands,” a highly placed source in the political space told the publication. The source explained that there was no intention to kill the deceased, but to beat him up in an effort to ensure he does not repeat what he had done. However, it appears that during their fight, he sustained serious body and head injuries. Assistant superintendent Tabengwa Magwama of Maun Police confirmed that they are investigating the case involving the death of the 28-year old man. The matter was reported to them last week. Without mentioning names he said, “I can confirm that we have a murder case that we are currently investigating and have five suspects that we are holding in custody.” He explained that the matter is still fresh and suspects have not appeared before court. “We are still not sure what led to the altercation between the deceased and the suspects, we are still figuring out who among the five will be appearing before court”, he said.
