BATSWANA BOIL OVER CHOPPIES ‘STREET VENDOR’ SNAP
Magatwe a re some Batswana are up in arms and want to boycott buying from Choppies after they saw a picture circulating on social media showing the chain store’s employees seemingly selling food items under some stall in what many believe the store is taking up the space of street vendors. Like really, Choppies?? Gatwe the picture is a depiction of how the store wants to squeeze out every business from big supermarkets down to the street vendors.
the chain store started off by outmuscling the Batswana owned supermarkets in towns around the country; forced the closure of small general dealers across the country’s villages; made local butcheries and bakeries irrelevant in some areas, and have since started selling small packets of sweets and other snacks that were the preserve of vendors on the peripheries of big establishments. It turns out that many of the Batswana who were angry never even bothered to find out exactly what was happening and where. The picture was first shared by the Choppies establishment at their facebook page, sharing their participation at some local event where a number of businesses had booked stalls to showcase their products. Clearly the picture was understood out of context, but it went to show how angry a nation we can be over things even without understanding them. Just like at a trade fair where companies book stalls, the event in question had sold stalls to various companies and Choppies happened to be one of them – not the first time the store had supported local events by buying stalls. Many however have the impression that they are going to walk by in some street to find a Choppies vendor under a tree
