“Breathing has always been a part of our wellness arsenal, but somehow as one grows older, breathing becomes less and less scientific. It becomes shallow, and we begin to breathe in the chest, rather than the stomach,” explained Yoga Instructor at Art of Living, Pauline Sebina.

“Many stress related ailments, whether physical, mental or emotional, may be caused by improper breathing, and fortunately, they can be

reversed by adopting natural breathing mechanisms."

Breathing properly increases the lungs capacity to get more oxygen. The lungs’ main function is kidney function over time, according to the Global Kidney Foundation (GKF). The kidneys are powerful “chemical factories” that remove waste and drugs from the body, balance the body’s fluids, release hormones that regulate blood pressure and stimulate red blood cell production, filtering and returning to the bloodstream about 200 quarts of fluid every 24 hours, according to the foundation. Speaking during the commemoration of World Kidney Day recently, the minister said the theme , “kidney health for all: bridge the knowledge gap to better kidney care”, called for people to be aware of their kidney health, seeking the appropriate health information and seeking active health measures in relation to their kidney health. Preventing kidney disease needn’t be expensive or complicated, he stressed, “routinely measuring blood pressure and performing simple urine and blood tests, in combination with treatments for high blood pressure and diabetes are enough to stop the progression of kidney disease”.

Health and Wellness minister, Dr Edwin Dikoloti has called for awareness on early detection of kidney disease Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects one in 10 people. Often described as ‘a silent illness hiding in plain sight’, it usually develops slowly over time and chips away at the patients’ quality of life. Over 300 patients in Botswana develop kidney failure and require some form of dialysis every year.

“By the time the body shows the typical symptoms of CKD, like fatigue, lack of energy, and swelling, the patient would have already entered the acute stage, in which only 30 percent of the kidneys are functioning. Therefore, the disease must be detected at the early stage to slow down the degeneration of the kidneys, and to give the patient a better chance to be cured,”said Dr Dikoloti. Kidney disease is characterized by the gradual loss of with lots of fruits and vegetables, exercising and reducing sedentary activity throughout the day could
